Irene S. (Martin) Hayward

View Tribute and Sign Guestbook SOMERSET, MA – Irene S. (Martin) Hayward, 90, a resident of Southpointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fall River, formerly of Somerset, died Palm Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel and Frances (Silva) Martin, she was the wife of the late Edward L. Hayward.
Mrs. Hayward worked as a sewing machine operator in the garment industry in Fall River for many years before she retired in 1981. Irene was a communicant of Saint Patrick’s Church in Somerset. She was active in the Somerset Village Seniors and was also a member and past secretary of the local ILGWU.
One of her true joys was attending the baseball games played by her great-grandsons over the past few years. Irene enjoyed the activities at Southpointe, especially the horseracing. Irene was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan who also liked sew.
Mrs. Hayward is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Morgan of Westport, MA; two brothers, Myron Martin of Tiverton, RI, and Manuel Martin of Provincetown, MA; three grandchildren, Meredith Dias, Melissa Southworth and Michelle Machado; five great-grandchildren, Harrison, Nicholas, Charles, Peyton and Leah; and also survived by a niece and a nephew. She was the sister of the late Mary Fernandes Mary Angel Martin.
Funeral Information
Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 8:00am from the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME for FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 900am in Saint Patrick’s Church, 306 South St., Somerset, with burial to follow in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours with Video Photo Album will be Tuesday, March 30, from 4:00-7:00pm in the funeral home.
