Wilfred J. Baillargeon

View Tribute and Sign Guestbook Wilfred J. Baillargeon, 88, of Woonsocket, died Tuesday in the Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket. He was the beloved husband of 64 years of Claire J. (Cote) Baillargeon. Born in Woonsocket on February 6, 1918, he was a son of the late Wilfred J. and Angelina (Gladue) Baillargeon. Mr. Baillargeon was a lifelong resident of Woonsocket, a graduate of Woonsocket High School, Class of 1937, and a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Woonsocket.
He worked for the Woonsocket Highway Department from 1938 to 1940. He was employed at Taft-Pierce Mfg. Co. from 1941 to 1958, and while there served as President of Lodge #1606, International Association of Machinists, AFL-CIO, for many years. He was the Secretary-Treasurer of District #64 of the Machinists Union from 1947 to1958, and was then elected Business Representative of District #64 in 1958 and served until 1978. He was then elected District Business Manager until he retired in 1983. He was elected to represent the US Department of Labor at the 1962 International Industrial Trade Fair in Casablanca, Morocco, and served as an interpreter to the Machinist Vice President at an International Metalworkers Federation Conference held in Toulouse, France. He served on the Democratic City Committee for many years and the Woonsocket Board of Canvassers for one year. He was a life member of Council #113 Knights of Columbus of Woonsocket; a life member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO; and was a member of RI Retiree Chapter 94, AFSCME. He was elected State Representative for the former District #64 in Woonsocket from 1960 to 1972, a member of R.I. Former Legislators Association and a member of the R.I. Code Commission for several years.
Besides his wife, he leaves one brother, Joseph Baillargeon, a retired Woonsocket Police Chief of North Smithfield, two grandchildren, Jason W. Baillargeon of Columbia, MO, and Kimberly Schuman of Salina, KS; and four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, and his daughter-in-law, Joan M. Baillargeon of Columbia, MO. He was the father of the late Norman C. Baillargeon and the brother of the late Leona Carroll and Helen Chubka.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, February 6, at 10:00AM in Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 1409 Park Avenue, Woonsocket, R.I.
