TIVERTON, RI – Captain Richard P. Faria, 93, of Main Road, Tiverton, formerly of New Bedford, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River. He was the husband of the late Cecilia (Botelho) Faria.

Captain Faria was a United States Merchant Marine, serving in World War II. Upon returning from service, he worked for the Steamship Authority for more than thirty years, and was the last captain on the steamship, Nobska, before she was sold. Captain Faria was appointed the Deputy State Pilot Commissioner by former Governor Foster Furcolo, and served during the 60’s and 70’s. He was a member of the Master Mates and Pilots-Union.

He leaves two daughters, Nancy Richard of Bristol, RI, and Joan C. Daley of Fairhaven, MA; one brother, Walter P. Faria of Dartmouth, MA; three grandchildren, Gail Koerber of Wilmington, MA, Edward Macedo of Dartmouth, MA, and the late, Michael A. Daley; two step-grand-children; one great-granddaughter, Kimberly Koerber of Wilmington, MA; three step-great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew. Mr. Faria was the brother of the late John Faria.

Funeral Information

His funeral will be held on Monday, June 18, 2007, at 8:45AM, from the DONAGHY FUNERAL HOME, 465 County Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts, to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Saint Joseph’s Church, Spring and Adams Street, Fairhaven. Burial will follow in Cushing Cemetery, Mattapoisett. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3:00-7:00PM in the funeral home.
