Helen L. Calder

FALL RIVER – Helen L. Calder, 99, of Fall River, formerly of Somerset, passed away Monday, March 16, 2009, at the Adams House in Fall River. Born in Somerset, the daughter of the late William and Lucie (Connell) Calder, Ms. Calder lived in Somerset most of her life, before moving to Fall River in 1993.

Ms. Calder taught in the Somerset Public School system for forty-four years as a sixth grade teacher. During WWII she was acting principal at the South School in Somerset. Ms. Calder was an honorary member of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fall River, the Somerset Woman’s Club, the Star of Bethlehem Chapter OES, the Seekonk Chapter OES and the Somerset Historical Society. Helen also served as a teacher in the Junior Department of the Church school of First Baptist for several years.

Ms. Calder is survived by five nieces, Ann Calder O’Hare of Mashpee, MA; Susan Lamarine of Arizona; Lucie Calder of Baltimore, MD; Alison Drummond of Arizona; and Nancy Whitelaw of Minnesota; two nephews, Denton Connell Calder of Hanover, MA; and William Calder of Florida. She was the sister of the late Walter L. Calder, Donald R. Calder, Leonard C. Calder, William Calder, and Rhoda J. Atherton; and the aunt of the late Barbara Calder, Walter Calder, Jr., and Marilyn Duclos.

Funeral Information

Her funeral service will be held Saturday, March 21, 2009, at 12:00 Noon in the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME for FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset. Burial will follow in Gibbs Cemetery, Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held from 10:00AM to 12:00 Noon prior to the service.
