Elsie E. (Rapoza) Thornton, 84, of Highland Avenue in Fall River formerly of Swansea and Somerset for many years passed away Monday, December 26, 2005 at the Highland Manor Nursing Home in Fall River. She was the wife of the late Walter F. Thornton Sr. Born in Fall River, MA on July 16, 1921 the daughter of the late Domingos and Virginia (Perreira) Rapoza, she was a graduate of Joseph Case High School in Swansea and a majorette in the marching band.

Mrs. Thornton worked as a seamstress in the textile industry for fifty years and retired in 1986, also she was a very active member and communicant of Saint John of God Church in Somerset for many years, a member of the International Ladies garment Workers Union.

Survivors are three sons Walter F. Thornton Jr. of Somerset, MA William J. Thornton Centerville, MA John R. Thornton of Brockton, MA five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary Victorino, Virginia Thibeault, Caroline Rapoza Oliver, Andy, John, and Donald Rapoza.

Funeral Information

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at 8am from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA followed by a mass of Christian burial at 9am in Saint John of God Church 996 Brayton Ave., Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend, burial to follow in the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Calling hours with a video photo album are Wednesday, December 28, 2005 from 2-4 & 7-9pm.
