View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – Harold A. Nickerson, Jr., 78, of Fairhaven, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, after a brief illness. Born in Lower Wood’s Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of the late Harold A., Sr., and the late Emma (Goreham) Nickerson, he was the husband of Dolores K. (Olsen) Nickerson.
Mr. Nickerson moved to Nantucket when he was nine months old and then to New Bedford when he was thirteen. He subsequently settled in Fairhaven fifty-two years ago and was a member of the New Life Tabernacle Church. A U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War, following his military service he captained the fishing vessel Molly and Jane. He later captained other fishing vessels until retirement. In retirement he enjoyed golfing and reading and Sunday night games of Canasta with his family. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the New England sports teams on the television. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and dog Mavin.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Nickerson leaves three sons, Craig Nickerson and his wife Maureen, and Scott Nickerson and his wife Patricia, all of Fairhaven, and Harold A. Nickerson, III, of Mt. Vernon, NY; a daughter, Cheryl Nickerson of Fairhaven; a brother, Norman Nickerson of Minnesota; three sisters, Winifred Mulkern and Genevieve Solonika, both of Maine, and Elaine Nickerson of New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Jessica Nickerson and her companion Dan Clark and Zachary Nickerson, both of Fairhaven; a great-grandson, Noah Nickerson of Fairhaven; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Nickerson was the brother of the late Marie Folger.
Funeral Information
His funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at 10:00AM in THE FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, followed by interment in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven.
