Walter F. Zagol, 83 years old, husband of Adela (Zagrodny) Zagol, died on Saturday, September 16, 2006 in Morton Hospital after being stricken at his home. Born in Manitoba, Canada, son of the late Frank and Caroline (Specht) Zagol. Mr. Zagol was 18 years old when in jumped with the 101st Airborne into France on D-Day. He was wounded a received the Purple Heart award from the Army. His other military awards are Good Conduct Medal; Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star with valor and oak leaf cluster; Combat Infantry Badge; National Defense Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Parachute Badge with two combat stars; WW II Victory Medal; ARCAM with 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster: Armed Force Reserve Medal with hour glass; American Campaign Medal; Belgian Forrangere; Netherlands Orange Lanyard;Presidential Unit Citation with oak Leaf Cluster;Medialle de la France Liberee;Belgian Commerative Medal; Victory in Mormandy medallion;.During WW II he served in campaigns in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes Alsace and Central Errupe. After WW II he served for over 25 years in the Army Reserves retiring in 1983 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was a retired Insurance Agent for Prudential, John Hancock and SBLI . He was for 6 years, a US Postal Service employed in the Somerset area. He was a member of the David F. Adams Post VFW and a member of the Ritual Team. He was also a member of “the Committee for Economic Development”;former president and director of Bristol Health Association and Vice Presidnet of Taunton-Attleboro Life Underwriters; American Legion and the 101st Airborne Association, he travelled back to Europe on several occasions with the 101st Airborn Association. A graduate of Downers Grove High School in Illinois and attended Northwestern University, University of Rhode Island, Boston University and Bridgewater State College. A communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Taunton. He was the husband of 60 years of Adela (Zagrodny) Zagol whom he met while awaiting discharge from the Army at the former Myles Standish military facility in Taunton. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter June Bessette and her husband Robert of Raynham and a son Edward Zagol and his wife Janine of Plymouth, grandchildren Eric and Mark Zagol, Scott, Jennifer and Douglas Bessette and four great grandchildren and a sister Jane Besco of AR. Funeral InformationRelatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Rosary Church on Thursday, September 21, 2006 at 9AM. Interment Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours are on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 from 4-8PM. Donations Information
