FAIRHAVEN – Armand Santos, 78, of Fairhaven, died after a long illness on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at the Royal of Fairhaven, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Norma (Duarte) Santos, with whom he shared fifty-three years of marriage.

Born in Acushnet, the son of the late Joaquim and the late Gertrude (Cotta) Santos, he lived in Fairhaven most of his life, and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven, where he carried the statue in the Our Lady of the Angel’s Parade for fifty-five years.

Mr. Santos was employed as a truck driver for many years and was a member of the Teamster’s Union Local #59. He also worked as a bridge operator on the New Bedford/Fairhaven Bridge for thirteen years, until retiring fifteen years ago.

Mr. Santos served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and played football on its All European Team. Prior to entering the service, he played football and softball for the Livsey Club. Upon his return from the service, he played for the Fairhaven Varsity Club and later the Boston Sweeper’s Semi-Pro Football Team.

Mr. Santos was a life member and officer of the Fairhaven Varsity Cub and a member of the Livsey Club, where he coached several youth programs. He also coached Fairhaven Little League and Recreational basketball. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and American Legion in Fairhaven, the Jolly Seniors, the Garment Worker’s Senior Club and the St. Therese Senior Club. He was an avid camper and enjoyed taking trips with all the various senior groups. Mr. Santos was also a former member of the New Bedford Moose Club. He was known for being an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Santos leaves a son, Armand M. Santos and his wife Kyle of Lakeville; a daughter, Truddi Santos-Clark of Fairhaven; two brothers, Miguel Santos of Dartmouth and Daniel Santos of New Zealand; five grandchildren, Jayson and Ryan Clark, Raelyn M. Santos, Keana M. Santos and Sierra M. Santos; two great-grandchildren, Amanda R. Clark and Asia L. Clark; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Santos was the great-grandfather of the late Jayson M. Clark, Jr., and the brother of the late Lionel and Lucy Santos and Irene Cabral.

Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 7, 2007, at 9:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment with full military honors will follow the burial Mass in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
