NEW BEDFORD – Herman O. “Eddie” Carreiro, 81, of Fairhaven, died on Sunday, July 29, 2007, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Alice D. (Cordeiro) DeTerra-Carreiro, with whom he shared fourteen years of marriage after the passing of his wife of forty years, the late Hilda (Botelho) Carreiro.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Carlos and the late Gloria (Cabral) Carreiro, he settled in Fairhaven in 1950. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven. Mr. Carreiro served in the U. S. Air Force during WWII and later was the proprietor of the Silver Dollar Market on Crapo Street in New Bedford.

Mr. Carreiro was a devoted husband and father who cherished spending time with his family. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing BINGO and traveling to casinos. He was a member of both the St. Mary’s in Fairhaven and Mt. Carmel in New Bedford Senior Clubs, participating in many of their sponsored activities.

Besides his wife, Mr. Carreiro is survived by a daughter, Shirley C. Ochipa and her husband William of Cooper City, FL; a step-son, Leonard DeTerra of New Bedford; two step-daughters, Diane Morgado of New Bedford and Joyce Mello of Dartmouth; a brother, Louis Carreiro of South Dartmouth; a sister, Thelma C. Alves of East Freetown; three nieces and two nephews; nine step grandchildren and ten step-great- grandchildren.

Funeral Information

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at 9:00AM from the FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven. Calling hours are on Tuesday, July 31, 2007, from 5:00-8:00PM in the funeral home.
