NEW BEDFORD – John H. Jorgensen, 75, of New Bedford, died Monday, March 2, 2009, in St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford. He was the former husband of the late Judith (Johnson) Jorgensen.

Born in Karmoy, Norway, the son of the late Johannes and the late Elisa (Danielsen) Jorgensen, he came to this country in the 1950’s and worked as a merchant marine and then as a commercial fisherman. He was the captain and owner of the Atlantic Challenger of New Bedford, later captaining the Ocean Hunter of Alaska. He enjoyed spending time with his family and telling stories of the sea.

He is survived by two sons, John K. Jorgensen and his wife Anne of Fairhaven, and Earl B. Jorgensen of Plainville; three daughters, Kim Richard of Fairhaven, Janet Jorgensen of New Bedford and Elisa Jorgensen of Plainville; a step-son, Kristian G. Johnson of New Bedford; a sister, Turid Lien of Norway; seven grandchildren, Brent Brodeur, Brooke Tavares, Karl Jorgensen, Jordan Richard, Alex Correia, Cody daCosta and Madison Richard; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. Jorgensen was the brother of the late Bjorg Halvorsen.

Funeral Information

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at 1:00PM in the Seamen’s Bethel in New Bedford.
