SWANSEA – Stephen E. Gardella, 92, of Swansea, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at the Country Gardens Nursing Center in Swansea. Born in Fall River, MA, the son of the late Stephen A. and Hannah (Flaherty) Gardella, he was the husband Frances M. (Morris) Gardella, with whom he shared sixty-seven years of marriage.

He was a 1935 graduate of BMC Durfee High School and a 1937 graduate of the former Durfee Bradford Tech, now the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He served his country during WWII with the United States Army.

Mr. Gardella worked for the City of Fall River for thirty years in the engineer’s office, retiring in 1982. He was a former member of the Swansea Seniors, the Our Lady of Fatima Seniors, the Over the Hill Gang, and the State and Municipal Retirees Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Frances A. Kingsley and her husband Frank, II, of Swansea, MA; a son, John William Gardella and his wife Paula of Swansea; two sisters, Angela Tripp and Virginia Burke, both of Dartmouth, MA; four brothers, Charles Gardella of Somerset, John Gardella of Fairhaven, MA, Robert Gardella of Rye, NH, and Joseph Gardella of Milford, MA; three grandchildren, Pamela Kingsley-Bryda, Frank H. Kingsley, III, and Stephanie L. Gardella; and one great-granddaughter, Eleanor Bryda. He was the brother of the late Gertrude Oliveira, Frank, William, Donald, and Paul Gardella.

Funeral Information

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2009, from 4:00-7:00PM in the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME for FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
