William P. Meehan, age 66, of Somerset, Massachusetts died peacefully Thursday, October 11, 2012.
Husband, father, grandfather and respected member of the community, he was far bigger than his stature. His loud voice could be heard in the Selectman’s Office of the Somerset Town Hall for 15 years as well as on the sidelines of his three grandson’s various sporting events. Seen driving through town, having breakfast, drinking coffee and chatting with friends at convenience stores, he embodied the best characteristics of the town he loved. Always available to help, ready to joke and ready to laugh, he was an Irishman.
After family and community, he loved baseball. He played when he was young, knew the game well and shared that knowledge with the town’s youth through years of coaching Somerset Little League. The only thing he could hit farther than a baseball was a golf ball, his clubs in the trunk of his car when he died. He was genuine. He was the man.
He leaves his wife, JoAnne; his sons John and Steve; their wives Denise and Kelly; his grandchildren Jake, Owen and Liam; his brothers David, Robert and John; numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends.
CALLING HOURS for Mr. Meehan will be held on MONDAY from 4-8pm in the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME for FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton Street, SOMERSET, with a Mass of Christian burial being held on TUESDAY at 10am in Saint John of God Church, 996 Brayton Ave., SOMERSET. Relatives and friends are invited to attend, burial to follow with MILITARY HONORS in Saint Patrick Cemetery, Somerset.
