View Tribute and Sign Guestbook TAUNTON/RAYNHAM – Linda P. Rogers Kerwin, a retired Taunton High School English teacher, died suddenly Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at her daughter’s home in Newton. Born in Danbury, CT, the daughter of the late Phillip and Evelyn (Reinertsen) Kerwin, Linda was educated in the Portland, ME public schools, graduating from Deering High School in 1960. She received a teaching degree from Gorham State Teachers College in 1964 and later earned a Master of Arts in English from Bridgewater State College. She married Edward Rogers in June, 1964, and moved to Massachusetts where she resided until her death.
Educating the next generation of responsible citizens was Linda’s passion and her life’s work. Linda taught English for forty years at Taunton High School, where she was an advisor for the Future Teachers Club, and a longtime beloved co-advisor of the Key Club. A year before she retired, she was named Teacher of the Year by the Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce. She was a past member of the Taunton Garden Club and the Sunset Heights Investment Club.
An accomplished bridge player, Linda participated in contract bridge tournaments and coached new players. She was an ardent Red Sox and Patriots fan and enjoyed reading Shakespeare and watching Jeopardy. Linda was a dedicated member of the Altar Guild at the Church of Our Savior in Middleboro, where she worshiped. In 1989 she moved to Raynham, where she lived until this past summer, when she moved to Newton to live with her daughter and her daughter’s family.
Linda will be missed by many relatives and friends, including Brenda Neugeboren, Cathy Charest and her cousins, Brenda Harrison and Nancy Martinson. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia L. Kerwin Derrick, her daughter-in-law, Hattie N. Kerwin Derrick, and her granddaughter, Stella P. Kerwin Derrick, all of Newton; her brother Donald Kerwin and his wife Lois of South Burlington, VT; her nephew, Scott Kerwin of Parker, CO; her niece, Anne (Kerwin) Frost and family of South Burlington, VT; her cousin, Nancy Martinson and family of Indiana; her cousin, Jean Getchell-Forbes and family from Harborside, ME; her aunt, Janet (Kerwin) Stanford of Scarborough, ME; and many Kerwin cousins from Maine and New Hampshire.
Funeral Information
Visiting hours will be held Friday, January 8, 2010, from 4:00-8:00PM in THE CRAPO-HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 350 Somerset Ave. (Route 138 South), Taunton, MA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at the Church of Our Savior, 120 Union Street, Middleboro, Saturday, January 9, 2010, at 11:00AM. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Interment will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, ME.
