Armando F. “Bibi” Estrela

Armando F. “Bibi” Estrela, 86, of Fairhaven, passed away Friday, August 11, 2017, at Our Lady’s Haven, in Fairhaven, after a period of declining health.  He was the husband of 58 years, of Gertrudes (Ferro) Estrela.

Born and raised in Olhao, Algarve, Portugal, the son of the late Manuel deMendonca Estrela and Ilda (daCruz) Estrela, he migrated to the United States where he worked as a shrimp fisherman, in Georgia, prior to settling in Fairhaven, where he lived for 30 years.  After retirement Armando moved back to Portugal where he spent the last 22 years until his illness.  He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, in New Bedford.

Armando attended Maritime School, in Lisbon, and when he lived in Fairhaven he owned and Captained various fishing vessels.  He was a Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching soccer and following his favorite team, Porto.

He is survived by his wife;  a daughter, Ilda Estrela Vizzotti and her husband John of New York, NY;  two sons, Manuel F. Estrela of Miami Beach, FL and Steve F. Estrela and his wife Kerry of Fairhaven;  four grandchildren, Zachary Fishman, Steve R. Estrela, Chace Jabotte and Jacob Estrela;  three great grandchildren, Steve T. Estrela, Lucas Estrela and Liliana Jabotte;  and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mr. Estrela was predeceased by five brothers, Joao, Manuel, Rogerio, Eduardo and Joveniano.

 

Funeral Information

Calling hours are Sunday, from 2-5pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.  His funeral will be Monday, August 14, 2017, at 9:00am, from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Rivet St., New Bedford.  Interment will be in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven.
