Wilbur Whittaker, 95, of New Bedford, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2017, surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Shirley I. (Stone) Whittaker.
Born and raised in New Bedford, son of the late Thomas W. and Lillian (Johnson) Whittaker, he was a lifelong resident of the city and also a winter resident of Florida, after retirement. He was a member of the South Baptist Church, in New Bedford.
Wilbur graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School and then served in the Navy during WWII. He later was a Firefighter for over 33 years for the New Bedford Fire Department. Wilbur enjoyed painting, salt water fishing and loved animals. He was also a member of the Howland Masonic Lodge AF & AM.
He is survived by a daughter, Marjorie J. Ouellette and her companion Douglas Slavin of Castleton, VT; six grandchildren, Karrie Condez and her husband Tony, Scott Barrett, John Wood and his wife Tiffanie, Amy Cabral and her husband Shane, Megan Barrett and Micah Wood and his companion Tiffany Sousa; nine great grandchildren, Jarred, Scott, Cassidy, Lilliann, Kyle, Caleigh, Brier, Brian and Clryssa and the late Brittany Barrett; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Whittaker was the father of the late William K. Whittaker and Marilyn E. Wood and father in law of the late Deborah Whittaker and Charles Ouellette.
In accordance with his wishes he will be cremated and a graveside service will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at 1pm, in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
