John R. DeMelo

John R. DeMelo, 75, of Taunton, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017, at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston. He was the husband of forty-nine years to Claudiana Melo.
John was born in Faial de terra Sao Miguel. He began working on a cattle farm and then served in the army for the country of Portugal as a paratrooper during the Guinea-Bissau War. Mr. DeMelo came to the United States in 1968 and worked for Reed and Barton as a polisher for thirty-seven years, retiring in 2004. While working hard to support and provide for his family, John frequently returned to the Azores. He enjoyed gardening , making wine and tending to his grape vines and fruit trees. Mr. DeMelo cherished the time he spent with his family and friends especially his grandchildren.
Survivors besides his wife are two daughters: Lucia M. Rodriguez and her husband Gabriel of Taunton; Jessica F. Melo of Taunton; two twin sons: Frank Melo and his fiancé Courtney of Berkley; and Nelson Melo of Taunton; nine grandchildren: Gabriel, Kevin, Krystal, Devin, Cody, Felicity, Braedyn, Andriel, Noah and Leilah; a great-granddaughter: Giuliana; two sisters: Maria de Graca DeMelo of Swansea; and Maria de Conceicao Leite of Warwick; along with several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel DeMelo.
His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017, at 9am, from the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave., Taunton, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10am, in Saint Anthony Church, 126 School Street, Taunton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial to follow in Mayflower Hill Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017, from 4-8pm, in the funeral home.
