Maria C. (Sousa) Melo, 76, of Fairhaven passed away Friday, January 27, 2012 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston after a long courageous battle with Leukemia. She was the wife of the late Jose “Joe” Melo.

Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, the daughter of the late Eduardo Sousa and Maria doDeus Lopes, she came to the United States after she married Joe and settled in Fairhaven 45 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven.

Mrs. Melo enjoyed gardening, sewing and especially spending time with her granddaughter Devin.

She is survived by a son, Joseph E. Melo of Fairhaven; a daughter, Suzanne M. Melo and her companion David Luiz and their daughter Devin Luiz of New Bedford; two brothers, Tobias Lopes of New Bedford and Alcipio Sousa of Agua dePau, Sao Miguel, Portugal; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Melo was the sister of the late Eduardo Sousa.

Funeral Information

Calling hours are Tuesday from 5-8 PM in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven. Her funeral will be Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 9:00 AM from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, New Bedford.
