View Tribute and Sign Guestbook Scituate/Somerset -- Edward Francis Murphy, Jr., 84, of Scituate, formerly of Somerset, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, MA. Born in Worcester, the son of the late Edward F., Sr. and Mildred (Brennan) Murphy, he was the husband of the late Dorothy C. Murphy.
A graduate of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Mr. Murphy was a commissioned naval officer in World War II, and served on the U.S.S. Beatty (DD-756) during the liberation of the Philippines. His career as an engineer with New England Electric System spanned forty-one years, and he retired from Brayton Point station in 1992. Mr. Murphy loved life and had many interests including gardening, cooking, bird watching, theology, and, most importantly, his family. A communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Somerset, he lived his faith daily. Mr. Murphy will be remembered for his caring heart and warm, genuine smile.
Mr. Murphy leaves a daughter, Christine M. Woods and her husband Kevin of Marshfield; two sons, Edward F. Murphy, III, and his wife Donna of Somerset, and David R. Murphy and his wife Anne of Reading; a brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Betty Murphy of Hertford, N.C.; a sister, Geraldine McCaffrey of Worcester; and eight grandchildren: Sean, Peter, Conor, Jennifer, Stephen, Alex, Brendan and Matthew. He was the brother of the late Warren Murphy and Virginia Owens.
Funeral Information
His funeral will be held Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. from THE HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME FOR FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Patrick’s Church, 306 South St., Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Somerset. Calling hours with video photo album will be held Friday, March 12, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
