MARION – John M. Scharff, Jr., 88, of Fairhaven, died on Monday, June 25, 2007, after a long illness, in Sippican Healthcare Center in Marion. He was the husband of Sylvia (Davis) Scharff. Born in Boston, the son of the late John and the late Margaret (Meara) Scharff, he grew up living in lighthouses on Great Point, Nantucket, Gurnet in Plymouth and Nobska in Woods Hole. He settled in Fairhaven in 1962.

Mr. Scharff was a commercial fisherman for forty-five years on various vessels out of Woods Hole, Fairhaven and New Bedford. He started playing the saxophone at the age of 84 and enjoyed classical and big band music as well as model ship building.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Scharff is survived by four sons, John Scharff and his wife Gerrie of East Falmouth, and Thomas, Kevin and Paul Scharff, all of Falmouth; two sisters, Eileen Bergstrom and Margaret Dimmock and her husband Richard, all of Falmouth; two nieces, Barbara Woodland and Gretchen Bergstrom; two nephews, John Bergstrom and Bart Dimmock; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Robert Scharff and the brother of the late Barbara Scharff.
