(Adshead) MacKenzie, 96, of New Bedford, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility, after a period of declining health. She was the widow of George M. MacKenzie. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph and Florence (Adams) Adshead, she lived in the city all of her life.
Mrs. MacKenzie was a very active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in New Bedford. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women of the Church and performed for many years in the church’s Kitchen Band, raising money for church upkeep and charity. She also ran the church’s craft table for many years at the church’s annual bazaar, and any activities or projects you that needed tending or volunteering, one would find Helen there. Thus, she was voted the church’s Woman of the Year in 2003. She enjoyed attending church retreats at Camp Aldersgate in RI, until her health made it no longer possible for her to attend. She was also one of the last survivors of the Mephenba Club.
Mrs. MacKenzie leaves a daughter, Linda MacKenzie of New Bedford; a son, Bruce MacKenzie and his wife Lisa of Toronto, Canada; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Williamson and her husband Keith of Wasaga Beach, Canada; a granddaughter, Heather MacKenzie and her companion Mike Pellitier of Toronto, Canada; a sister, Marian Hockaday of Bridgewater, NJ; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Leroy, Clarence, Chester and Charles Adshead.
Mrs. MacKenzie is also survived by three women whom she considered “daughters,” Jackie Bragga, Roxana Burt and Jane Wrigley; also two “canine grandchildren” whom she adored, Samantha and Jake. She also loved all of her “daughters” who were her bowling friends.
