James E. Dean

NEW BEDFORD – James E. Dean, 85, of New Bedford, died Monday, February 22, 2010, at home, surrounded by his family, after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Theresa M. (Medeiros) Dean. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Bertha (Woolley) Caulfield and the adopted son of the late Arthur and Bessie (Woolley) Dean.

He lived most of his life in New Bedford and was a graduate of New Bedford High School and was a member of its 1941 state championship football team. Mr. Dean later played semi-pro football for the Murphy Club. He was also a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford.

During WWII he served with the U. S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operation, in the Third Marine Air Wing in Hawaii and Midway Islands. After the war, he spent 29 years on the New Bedford Fire Department until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of the Quittacus Masonic Lodge AF & AM; and he enjoyed frequent trips to Florida and playing cribbage with his friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Anne Dean of New Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as a close personal friend and long time companion, Ann Musumeci of Oldsmar, FL. Mr. Dean was the brother of the late Dorothy (Dean) Hawkins and her late husband John.
