October 29, 2017
Jean Sharp Briggs, of Raynham, MA, widow of the late H. Walker Briggs, Jr., passed away peacefully at home, on October 29, 2017. Born in 1922 in Hanover, MA, she was the youngest of five children of William Harry and Margaret Tytler Harvey Sharp. Her husband, Walker, a prominent business and civic leader in the Taunton/Raynham area, passed away in 1991. She is survived by their three children, David (John) of Arlington, VA; Elaine (Carol) of El Cajon, CA; and, Corey (Donna) of North Quincy, MA. She is also survived by adoring nephews, nieces, and family members including Arthur and Pat Sharp of South Weymouth, MA and Linda Young of Port Clyde, ME.
While supporting Walker in his marine supply and real estate businesses and raising their three children, she worked in the Raynham Town Clerk’s Office and at the Raynham Public Library. Jean actively participated in local community organizations including the Old Colony History Museum, Taunton Civic Chorus, Southeastern MA Festival Chorus, and Encore Community Chorus. Until her later years, she was an active member of the First Congregational Church (the “Stone Church”) in Raynham, where she sang in the Church Choir. During her lifetime, Jean and Walker traveled the world including many USA trips in their RV named “Willie.” After his death, she was always ready for adventure and travel with their three children and their spouses. She was an ardent Red Sox and Patriots fan, an avid bowler and golfer, a lover of music, a fierce competitor in the game of dominos, a master jigsaw puzzle solver, and lived her long life as a marathon to be run and enjoyed to its fullest.
A celebration of Jean’s life is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., on November 12, 2017, at the First Congregational Church of Raynham located at 785 South Main Street. Following the service, the family will reminisce with friends at a reception in the Church’s social hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Organ Fund of the First Congregational Church of Raynham, 785 South Main Street, Raynham, MA 02767.
