Russell W. Hathaway

Russell W. Hathaway, husband of the late Mary Lou (Dow) Hathaway, Navy veteran, and a quiet presence in Somerset life all of his 87 years, died Tuesday in the Charlton Memorial Hospital.

A son of the late Sidney Lee Hathaway and late Bertha Lena (Dore) Hathaway, he was an integral part of the upper management team at the Spectator Publishing Co., later known as Hathaway Publishing retiring in 1986, 47 years after founding the enterprise with his brother Sidney L. Hathaway, Jr.

A WWII Navy Veteran, he was a member of the Warren S. Hathaway Post #228 of the American Legion. He was a past commodore of the Somerset Yacht Club and in 2006 he very proudly served as Grand Marshall in the Somerset Memorial Day Parade. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College, class of 1947.

He is survived by two daughters, Jane Hathaway Mitchell of St. Louis, MO, and Cynthia L. Burns of Swansea; three grandsons, Bradford R. Mitchell, Nicholas Hathaway and Brewster S. Mitchell; a great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Louis L. Hathaway, Sidney L. Hathaway, Jr. and Warren S. Hathaway, for whom the Somerset American Legion post was named.
