FALL RIVER – Doris L. Flanagan, 79, of Fall River, passed away at home, Saturday, January 24, 2008, surrounded by her family. Born in Kingman, Maine, the daughter of the late Peter J. Bishop and Margaret J. Gibbs, she was the wife of the late Agustin F. Flanagan, with whom she shared fifty-eight years of marriage.

Mrs. Flanagan graduated with the Class of 1945 of Gardiner High School. Doris was named Miss Gardner in 1945 and first runner-up for Miss Maine in 1946. She was a member of the first graduating class at B. C. C. School of Nursing, Class of 1971. She attended Salve Regina College, earning her Masters in Nursing in 1979. Mrs. Flanagan served as head nurse of Borden One Rehab Unit at the former Union Hospital for more than twenty years. She then served as a ward director for Paul Dever State School before retiring in 1995.

Mrs. Flanagan was a member of Mothers of Twins, the F. R. Garden Club, the F. R. Tree Planting Committee, the F. R. Historical Society, the C. M. H. Retirees Association, the C. M. H. Auxiliary, the Retired State Employees Association of MA, as well as serving as an ombudsman for Bristol Elder Services.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn F. Park and husband Richard, Taunton, MA; four sons, Michael A. Flanagan and his wife Susan, Oreland, PA, Joseph P. Flanagan and wife Myra, Old Saybrook, CT, John L. Flanagan and wife Patricia, and Mark D. Flanagan and his companion Fran Arruda, both of Fall River; a sister, Nina J. Conklin of Augusta, ME, and was the sister of the late Agnas Furrow, James P. and Harold Bishop; as well as her six grandchildren, Cassie, Courtney, Sean, Joseph, Arthur, and Victoria, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Information

Her funeral service will be held Friday, January 30, 2009, at 9:00AM from the HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 4:00 to 7:00PM in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring in Dover-Foxcroft, ME.
