View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – Mary (Alves) Cabral, 81, formerly of Fairhaven, died Sunday, October 26, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Home in New Bedford where she had resided for the past six years. She was the wife of the late Manuel J. “Bennie” Cabral, Jr. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late John F. Alves, Sr. and the late Adelaide (DaSilva) Alves, she grew up in the city and settled in Fairhaven in 1955. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven.
Mrs. Cabral worked at Aerovox for over twenty years in quality control. She later worked as a seamstress at various area clothing manufacturers until her retirement. She then volunteered her time at the Nichols House Nursing Home and Our Lady’s Haven. She was a member and former Treasurer of A.P.U.M., Inc. and a member of the Fairhaven Boys Club ladies group. Mrs. Cabral enjoyed sewing, gardening and watching her grandchildren play sports.
She is survived by a son, Stephen L. Cabral of Fairhaven; a daughter, Linda L. Cabral and her fiancé Joseph M. Garcia of Acushnet; two brothers, John F. Alves, Jr., of Acushnet and Alfred Alves of New Bedford; four grandchildren, David M. Gordon and his wife Gina M., Jessica Cabral Zelaney, Justine L. Gordon and Sophia M. A. P. Cabral; three great-grandchildren, Krystal L., Brittany L. and D. J. Genereux; a great-great-granddaughter, Abigail M. Adams; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cabral was the sister of the late Martinho Alves.
Funeral Information
Her funeral will be held Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at 9:00AM from the FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, October 28, from 4:00-8:00PM in the funeral home.
