View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – Wilfred Newton, 93, of Fairhaven, died unexpectedly Friday, May 22, 2009, in St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of the late Evelyn F. (Tapper) Newton. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Archer and the late Margaret (Smith) Newton, he settled in Fairhaven forty-seven years ago.
Mr. Newton attended New Bedford Vocational High School and later worked as a commercial fisherman for eighteen years before becoming a steam engineer for NSTAR where he worked for twenty years until retiring at age 62. He was a regular “Mr. Fix-It,” and was very handy as a carpenter. He enjoyed sailing, was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, who loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, his dogs, doing yard work and camping.
He is survived by two daughters, Marilyn J. Crete of Fairhaven and Eve Marques of New Bedford; three sons, Bruce W. Newton and his wife Joann of New Bedford, Robert P. Newton of Amesbury and Phil F. Newton and his wife Laurie of Cape Cod; a brother, Henry Newton of Florida; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Newton was the father of the late Charles Newton, the grandfather of the late Daniel Biron, and the brother of the late Archer and Alice Newton.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, May 26, 2009, from 4:00-8:00PM in THE FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, with a funeral service to be held Wednesday, May 27, at 11:00AM in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Nasketucket Cemetery, Fairhaven.
