Gladys (Donahue) Hallett

View Tribute and Sign Guestbook REHOBOTH – Gladys (Donahue) Hallett, 98, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Born in Roslindale, MA, the eldest daughter of the late Leonard and Elida (Smith) Donahue, she spent most of her early years at the family farm, known as Elmhurst, in Sandy Point, ME, and attend local schools there.
Her family later moved to Medford, MA, where she attended junior high school. On September 13, 1935, she married he first husband, Harry I. Margullis, and settled in Medford. During her time there, she was a loving mother to her daughter and worked as a cook in a local nursing home. In 1967 she and her husband retired to Sandy Point, ME.
After Harry’s death in 1970, she returned to Massachusetts and was employed as a clerk in the Middlesex County Registry of Deeds. On January 8, 1972, she married James Foster Hallett of Tewskbury, MA, and lived there until his death in 1992. During her years there she was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She loved going on train excursions with her husband and cooking for friends and family alike.
After Foster’s death, she moved to Rehoboth, MA, to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was an excellent cook and an avid knitter who enjoyed creating things to nourish the body and please the eye. Full of life, Gladys was not afraid to tell it like she saw it. She possessed a great dry wit and the ability to make people smile. A lifelong diehard Red Sox fan, Ted Williams was her favorite player. She claimed to remember EVERY Red Sox World Series triumph.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Margullis) Sawyer and her husband Michael of Rehoboth. She was the grandmother of Peter M. Sawyer and his wife Joy of Limington, ME, and Jennifer Sawyer Pohill and her husband Jereme of Denver, CO. She was the great-grandmother of Jillian Sawyer and the late Jonathan Sawyer. She also leaves three nephews, Joseph Donahue, Jr., and his wife Lyn of Medway, David Donahue and his wife Diane of Etna, CA, and Keith Donahue and his wife Patty of Kittery, ME, and a niece, Debi (Donahue) Bois and her husband David of Tujunga, CA. She was also the aunt of the late Cheryl (Donahue) Barry of Wilmington, MA. She was the sister of the late Arthur Donahue of Tujunga, CA, and Joseph Donahue of Medway.
Funeral Information
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend, will be held in THE CRAPO-HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 350 Somerset Ave. (Route 138 South), Taunton, Monday, June 29, 2009, from 10:00AM to 12:00 Noon with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow in the Sandy Point Cemetery, Sandy Point, ME, Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 2:00PM.
