Frances (Gillis) Sergeant

View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – Frances (Gillis) Sergeant, 81, of Hathaway Road, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Hugh Gillis and the late Lillian (MacKenzie) Peterson, she was the wife of the late Thomas Reginald Sergeant.
Mrs. Sergeant was a 1945 graduate of New Bedford High School, then went on to receive her BA in Journalism Cum Laude from the University of Houston in May, 1979. She then went on to work as a teller for many years at the Merchants Bank on Purchase Street. She was also a feature writer for the Abucks Company in suburban Philadelphia in the criminal records department. Mrs. Sergeant was the Block Director for the American Red Cross Houston Zoological Society and the United Red Cross Fund. A member of the New Bedford Visitors Center and the Cahoon Art Museum, she enjoyed traveling and nature studies.
She leaves one daughter, Christina Sergeant of the Republic of Singapore; two sons, Thomas Sergeant of Chicago, Illinois, and David Sergeant of Bangkok, Thailand; one sister, Catherine Claire Gillis of New Bedford; three grandchildren, Ian Tan, Elizabeth Tan and Zachary Tan, all of Singapore.
Funeral Information
A graveside service will be held Monday, August 18, 2008, at 11:00AM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, MacArthur Boulevard, Rte 28, Bourne, MA. Friends and relatives are invited to attend; the gathering will form at 10:45AM at the front of the cemetery by the administration building.
