John "Jack" Whalen

View Tribute and Sign Guestbook John "Jack" Whalen, 81, of New Bedford died at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a long illness. He was the husband of Virginia (Barney) Whalen, they were married 59 years.
Born in New Bedford the son of the late William and Gertrude (Sullivan) Whalen, he was a life long resident of New Bedford and a life long communicant of St. Lawrence Martyr Church, New Bedford.
John was a graduate of New Bedford High School Class of 1942 and was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. He participated in the campaign of New Guinea and Luzon and received the Asian Pacific theatre ribbon with two bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Good Conduct Metal.
At the onset of his illness, he was employed by NStar. His total years of employment with the utility companies was 54. During this period, he served as President and Treasurer of the Brotherhood of Utility Workers Union. He was a life long time member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Photography was one of his hobbies, but mostly he was an avid traveler. With his wife Ginny, he traveled the world, but was probably the happiest when “Crossing the Pond” on the QE II and returning home on the Concord. However, his yearly trips to Myrtle Beach with his daughter and grandchildren were also high on his list of pleasures.
He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Maranhas and Ann La Frinere and her husband Dennis of New Bedford and Susan Tyler of Randolph; a sister-in-law, Beatrice “Trix” Whalen of New Bedford;six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late William H. Whalen, III and brother-in-law.

Friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend his funeral Monday, April 24, 2006 at 9:00 AM from the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Lawrence Martyr Church, New Bedford. Interment will be in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford. Calling hours are Sunday 5-8 PM.
