FALL RIVER, MA – Mary F. (Downey) Silva, 87, of Fall River, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at her residence surrounded by her family. Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late Albert and Annie (Roberts) Downey, she was the wife of the late Jose M. Silva, Jr.

A 1940 graduate of BMC Durfee High School, she attended nursing school at Boston Hospital. Mrs. Silva devoted her life to raising her family. She also worked for the Fall River School Department for twenty years as a teacher’s aid at the Lincoln School, retiring in 1994.

Mrs. Silva was an avid football fan, an animal lover and a supporter of numerous children’s charities. She enjoyed Sudoku puzzles and gardening.

She is survived by two daughters, Pamela Anne Medeiros and her husband Thomas of Fall River, and Candyce C. Bogus and her husband Tilden of Somerset; two sons, J. Bryon Silva and his wife Catherine of Swansea, and D. Bradley Silva and his wife Mary Grace of Fall River; seven loving grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, David, Justin, Andrew, Nicholas and Rachael; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late R. Bruce Silva and was also pre-deceased by a sister and two brothers.

Funeral Information

Her funeral service will be held Thursday, March 11, 2010, at 11:00am in the HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River. Calling hours will be prior to the funeral service from 9:00 to 11:00am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend; however, burial will be private at the request of the family.
