View Tribute and Sign Guestbook TAUNTON – John Bettencourt, 92, a twelve-year Taunton resident and formerly a long time resident of East Hartford, CT, died Monday, February 2, 2010, at his home. Born in Santa Maria, Azores, the son of the late Victorino and Maria de Santo Antonio ( Figueiredo) Bettencourt, Hh was the husband of Rosa P. (Chaves) Bettencourt, now of Taunton, with whom he shared a sixty-seven year marriage.
John was an assistant engineer in the 1950’s in Sta. Maria and Terceira with the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers, building airbases on both islands. He owned a business in Sta. Maria, a flourmill and a farm with many employees. When he and his family moved to Connecticut, he worked on various construction projects and later was employed by the Hughes Convalescent Home in West Hartford as the maintenance supervisor until retirement.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford and St. Andrew the Apostle in Taunton. He was one of the founders of the Holy Ghost Society in East Hartford.
Besides his wife, Maria, John is survived by his daughter, Joann Caron and her husband Carlton H. Caron of Taunton. He was the father and father-in-law of the late Eulalia Giraldes and her husband Fernando, the grandfather of four and the great-grandfather of three. He was the brother of Adelaide Helena and the late Amelia, Maria Filomenia, Adelina, Isaura, Manuel, Jose, Antonio and Virginio and the uncle of many.
Funeral Information
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Andrew the Apostle Church Friday, February 5, 2010. Interment was held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Taunton.
