Mary (Alves) Harrington

FALL RIVER – Mary (Alves) Harrington, 88, of St. Joseph St., Fall River, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at the Sarah Brayton Nursing Home in Fall River. Born in Swansea, a daughter of the late John S. & Mary R. (Gonsalves) Alves, she was the wife of the late William Harrington.

A resident of Fall River for more than sixty years, coming from Swansea, Mrs. Harrington worked as a manager and travel agent in various travel agencies for more than twenty-seven years, before retiring in 1980. She was a parishioner of Holy Name Church.

Mrs. Harrington was a graduate of the Class of 1937 of Case High School, where she chaired the reunion committee for many years. She attended Bristol Community College, and the former S.M.U. (now the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth). She also worked as a receptionist for the Oliveira Funeral Homes for over ten years, served as member of the Fall River School Committee for twenty-four years, and was a Past Master and member of the Swansea Grange, as well as a Lecturer for Grange. She chaired the First Mothers, March of Dimes, was a former chair of the Bristol County March of Dimes, an early organizer of the PTA’s in the city, chaired the PTA Council, served as Secretary & Vice Chair of Massachusetts Association of School Committees, as was convention chair for organization.

Mrs. Harrington hosted a half hour radio show in the 1950s, and a women’s talk show on WALE Radio. She was a Girl Scout leader in Swansea for many years, very active in the Portuguese American Civic League, served on the Regional Vocational School Planning Committee as Vice President, and worked on their committee for over five years, and Chairperson. She was appointed to the Diman Hall of Fame. Her many achievements included drawing, painting, hat-making, writing, creating poetry, travel, jewelry making, creating detailed ceramics, and becoming accomplished on the computer well into her 80’s.

She is survived by a son, Michael P. Harrington of Broad Brook, CT; a daughter, Patricia M. Texeira of Somerset; two sisters, Amelia R. Thurston of Swansea , and Victoria Desrosiers of Somerset; a granddaughter & her husband, Lisa M. & Attorney Jeffrey P. Medeiros; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Alice Stone and the late Caroline Lindholm.

Funeral Information

Her funeral will be held Monday, July 7, 2008, at 9:00AM from THE HATHAWAY HOME FOR FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, MA, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Immaculate Conception Church, Thomas St., Fall River. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be conducted on Sunday, July 6, from 4:00–7:00PM in the funeral home.
