View Tribute and Sign Guestbook NEW BEDFORD – Steven J. Barbosa, 66, of New Bedford, formerly of Swansea, died Friday, May 8, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of the late Jerome J. and the late Martha E. (Perry) Barboza, he grew up in Swansea, where he graduated with the Class of 1960 from Case High School, and later lived in Westport and Fall River before settling in New Bedford three years ago.
Mr. Barbosa served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War and later worked at Raytheon in production control. He most recently worked as a case worker at the Opportunity Center in New Bedford.
He is survived by two daughters, Christine DeMello and her husband Michael of New Bedford and Katherine Perry and her husband Mark of Wolcott, CT; a son, John Barbosa of Fall River; a brother, Gene Barboza and his wife Beverly of Powell, TN; his longtime companion, Susan York of Fairhaven; five grandchildren, Robert and Rachel DeMello, Timothy Sousa and Brittany and Magan Perry; and two nieces, Donna Marie Long and Sandra Lee Barboza. Mr. Barbosa was the uncle of the late Michael Barboza.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2009, from 5:00-8:00PM in THE DONAGHY FUNERAL HOME, 465 County Street, New Bedford. Cremation will follow and interment will be private.
