Olinda R. (Duarte) Tavares-Owen

FAIRHAVEN – Olinda R. (Duarte) Tavares-Owen, 89, of Fairhaven, died Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the Royal of Fairhaven after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Ernest P. Tavares, with whom she shared a forty-eight year marriage, and the late Walter E. Owen. Born in Fairhaven, the daughter of the late Manuel and the late Filomina (DaSilva) Duarte, she was a lifelong resident of the town.

Olinda was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and the Mayer School of Design in New York City. She was a pattern maker and designer and worked at various area clothing manufacturer’s. An accomplished artist, her work was exhibited locally on many occasions. Mrs. Tavares-Owen was a member of the Beirstadt Art Society, the Lady Garment Worker’s Retiree’s and the Jolly Whaler’s Retiree’s.

She is survived by a daughter, Melinda Irzyk and her husband Thaddeus, Jr., of New Bedford; a son, Ernest P. Tavares, Jr., of Reno, NV; a grandson, Ernest P. Tavares, III, of Reno, NV; a godson, Robert Duarte of Fairhaven; and many nieces and nephews. Olinda was the last of many brothers and sisters.

Funeral Information

In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated and memorial calling hours will be Thursday, May 27, 2010, from 4:00-8:00 PM in THE FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, with a service at 7:00 PM. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 28, 2010, at 11:00 AM in River-Side Cemetery.
