Nelson, MD, 95, of Mechanic Street, Attleboro, a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Epoch of Norton. He was the beloved husband of Edna (Lahey) Nelson and the late Ernestine Blount Nelson. Born in Attleboro, Dr. Nelson was the son of the late Peter and Anna (Lund) Nelson.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University in 1935 and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1938. Dr. Nelson established his private practice prior to enlisting in the United States Army in 1942, where he served for three years. Upon returning from military service, Dr. Nelson resumed his private practice while serving as City Physician for the City of Attleboro. He continued with post-graduate work, taking courses at the University of Vienna for acupuncture and pain control, and also studying in Upsala, Sweden, Vicenza, Italy, and the University of Paris.
Dr. Nelson was a staff member at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for forty years, eighteen of which he served as Chief of Anesthesiology. He later became Vice President of the United Way and continued as an active member for an additional fifteen years. He was President of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Foundation for eight years, and also served as president of the Sturdy Hospital Staff and the Bristol North District Medical Society. He also served as Chairman of American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Bristol North District Medical Society. In addition he belonged to other professional organizations including the American Society Anesthesiology, the American Society Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, was a Life Member of American Medical Society of Vienna and a Charter Member of the American Pain Society.
After retirement from active practice, Dr. Nelson enjoyed golfing, playing locally and in West Palm Beach, Fl. While at home in Attleboro, his yard and garden were a source of pleasure, especially his love for rose bushes.
He was the beloved husband of Edna (Lahey) Nelson, and the loving father of Betsy D. Ziemienczyk and her husband Mark Ziemienczyk, and Richard B. Nelson and his wife Linda of Jupiter, Florida. He was also the devoted grandfather of Tracy L. Nelson of Attleboro. He is also survived by a brother, Alan R. Nelson and his wife Elaine of Rabien Gap, Florida, and a step-daughter, Rita L. Zipf of Harwich, MA; along with several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Arthur, George, Harry, Herbert, Earl and Lillian Nelson.
Funeral Information
His funeral will be held on Monday, July 30, 2007 at 9:30AM from the COOK FUNERAL HOME, 160 PARK ST., ATTLEBORO, MA, to be followed by a funeral service at 10:30AM in the Second Congregational Church, 50 Park Street, Attleboro.
