Doris Eva (Angell) Sharland

TAUNTON – Doris Elva (Angell) Sharland, 88, died Friday, 26 June, 2009, in the Marian Manor Nursing Home, Taunton. She had a been a resident of Marian Manor for the last four years and was surrounded by her loving family and the caring staff of the Manor. Born in Westfield, MA, the daughter of the late Harry and Elva (Dunham) Angell, she was he wife of Richard Sharlan, with whom she shared sixty-seven years of marriage.

A graduate of the Massachusetts State College, now the University of Massachusetts, in 1942, with a degree in human nutrition, she worked briefly at the Beverly Hospital in Beverly, MA, then later as a staff dietitian before starting her family with her beloved husband, Richard Sharland, now of Raynham. Longtime residents of Rock Knoll Estates in Taunton, Doris was active in many volunteer organizations, including the Girl Scouts, the PTA, and with her husband, provided hundreds of hours helping the Muscular Dystrophy Association with their fund-raising efforts.

Together they received a prestigious service award for MDA, which was presented to them by Tony Petraca of WPRI-TV. Doris was also a founding member of the Boston Chapter of the Tourette Syndrome Association in 1978, helping to comfort other families in the greater Boston area who had a child or other relative afflicted with this neurological disorder, for which there is no cure. Doris was member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Taunton for more than fifty years, where she taught Sunday School.

Along with her husband she is survived by the children, Roxanne Copeland and her husband Brad of Avon, CT, John Sharland and his wife Linda of Bridgewater, James Sharland and his wife Nancy of Lakeville, Arthur Sharland and his wife Gale of Raynham, and Robert Sharland of Raynham. Doris was the grandmother of nine and the great-grandmother of five.

Funeral Information

Visiting hours will be held in THE CRAPO-HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 350 Somerset Ave. (Route 138 South), Taunton, Monday, June 29, 2009, from 1:00 to 3:00PM, with a funeral service in the funeral home at 3:00PM. Interment will be private in the Pleasant Street Cemetery, Raynham on Tuesday.
