View Tribute and Sign Guestbook FAIRHAVEN – Janet B. (Swift) Whiting, 83, of Fairhaven, died Sunday, September 21, 2008, after a long period of declining health at the Royal of Fairhaven. She was the wife of the late Harry Whiting, with whom she shared fifty-four years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Ralph S. and the late Mildred M. (Baker) Swift, she was a lifelong resident of the town and a graduate with the Class of 1942of Fairhaven High School. She attended St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in New Bedford and graduated from the Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City.
Mrs. Whiting was a veteran of WWII serving in the WAVES and upon her discharge, held the rank of Pharmacists Mate 3rd Class. She was stationed in Hunter College, Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Mrs. Whiting was awarded the American Campaign Ribbon as well as the Victory Medal. She was a member of the American Legion Post 166 in Fairhaven and a Charter Member of the Women’s Memorial Foundation.
Mrs. Whiting was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Fairhaven for sixty-one years, where she was a member of the Church Fellowship and a Charter Member of the Junior Women Mother’s Club and its Past President, Treasurer and Secretary of the same. Mrs. Whiting was also a Deaconess of the Church and served as a substitute Sunday School Teacher and on various other committees. She was a past member of the Colonial Club, the Fairhaven Mother’s Club and was a Fairhaven Town Meeting Member and a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital.
She is survived by three sons, Philip S. Whiting and his wife Jerrine of Desmoines, WA, David R. Whiting and his wife Carol of Katy, TX, and Peter R. Whiting and his wife Cindy of Pompano Beach, FL; a daughter, Gay Louise Encarnacao and her husband David of Dartmouth; two brothers, Ralph S. Swift, Jr., of New Bedford and Richard W. Swift of Wareham; a sister-in-law, Claire Mieszczenski of Palm Springs, FL; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Whiting was the sister of the late Robert W. Swift.
Funeral Information
Her funeral will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at 10:00AM in the First Congregational Church in Fairhaven, followed by interment in River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, September 23, from 4:00-8:00PM in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, who is in charge of all arrangements.
