Eugene T. Furlani
May 02, 2017
Eugene T. Furlani, 89, peacefully passed away with his daughter by his side on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, after a brief period of declining health. He was the husband of Lorraine (Aubin) Furlani to whom he had been married for 68 years.
He was the son of Augusto and Elvira (Orabona) Furlani and a 1945 graduate of New Bedford High School. In 1991 he retired from CommElectric.
Survivors along with his wife include 2 daughters: Denise Roy and companion Brian Daniel and Jeanie Furlani Sullivan and companion Mark Teixeira; 4 grandchildren; Jared Roy and wife Lieu, Jayna DeMedeiros and husband Jason, Sabra Sullivan and Stasia Sullivan; 3 great grandchildren; Spencer DeMedeiros, Parker Roy and Preston DeMedeiros. He was the brother of the late Richard Furlani and Carol Furlani.
Gene shared his lifelong passion for music when transposing, teaching mainly accordion and many other instruments, and playing in local bands. He was known to his pupils young and old as ‘Mr. Gene’. Gene was loved and respected by his grandchildren all of whom he is credited with teaching to ride a two-wheel bicycle. The endearing bond between him and his grandson was again shared on November 5, 2016 when Gene proudly served as Jared’s Best Man. Please remember Gene as an always eager to help, humble, strong traditionalist who was forever pleasant, friendly, good-humored, tardy, long-winded, inquisitive, handy, musically gifted and proud to be an American. He always had a joke, riddle and/or (albeit long) story to share with his captive audience.
In accordance with his wishes he will be cremated and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM, on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, in New
Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Eugene T. Furlani, donations made will benefit local students pursuing a musical career.
