Barbara L. (Fermino) DePina, 83, of New Bedford, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at Hathaway Manor, in New Bedford, after a period of declining health.
Born and raised in New Bedford, daughter of the late Henry and Adeline (Gomes) Fermino, she was a lifelong resident of the city and communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Barbara was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Bristol Community College.
She was a school teacher in the New Bedford School system for over 20 years teaching at each of the cities Junior High Schools. She loved teaching young people. She also enjoyed dancing, swimming and having a laugh with friends and family. She belonged to many organizations over the years.
She is survived by a daughter, JoAnn Roberts of Los Angeles, CA; a son, Joseph Gomes of New Bedford; a sister, Bonita DeGrasse and her husband Quintin of New Bedford; a brother William “Billy Bee” Fermino of Arizona; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was the mother of the late Joyce Marie DePina and Judy Gale Dufour and sister of the late Joan Almeida, Anthony “Butch”, Henry, Jr. and Robert Fermino.
In accordance with her wishes she was cremated and a memorial service will be celebrated Friday, September 15, 2017, at 1:00pm, in the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County Street, New Bedford.
