Beatrice T. (Perreira) Shaker

FALL RIVER, MA - Beatrice "Bea" T. (Perreira) Shaker, 83, of Fall River, died Monday, July 12, 2010, at her residence. Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late August and Mary (Rapoza) Perreira, she was the wife of the late Joseph Shaker.
A 1943 graduate of BMC Durfee High School and 1946 graduate from the Union Hospital School of Nursing, Mrs. Shaker worked as a registered nurse at Charlton Memorial Hospital for thirty years, retiring in 1987. Mrs. Shaker was known for her compassion and care given to patients over the years. She also was respected by all her colleagues in the nursing field.
Bea was a dedicated fifty year member to the Union Hospital Nursing Alumni. She received an appreciation award from the alumni in 1981. Mrs. Shaker was a member of Saint Anthony of the Desert Parish in Fall River and very active in the Blessed Mother Guild at the church. Bea was also a member of the Charlton Memorial Hospital retirees, the Lebanon American Society Ladies Auxiliary, the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary in Westport, the Council on Aging, AARP, the Ocean Grove Seniors, Royal Travelers and the Fall River Historical Society. Bea was also a fundraiser for years for "We Love Children," and a volunteer in the gift shop at Charlton Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by three daughters, Donna Howayeck of Chicago, IL, Jane E. Carvalho of Plymouth, MA, and Carol Estrella of Westport, MA; a son, Joseph Shaker of Fall River, MA; a sister, Alice Gallant of Westport, MA; a brother, August Perreira of Newport, RI; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; she also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be held Friday, July 16, 2010, at 9:00 am from the HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, followed by a Mass of the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am in the Saint Sharbel Center at Saint Anthony of the Desert Church, 300 North Eastern Ave., Fall River, with burial to follow in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.
