View Tribute and Sign Guestbook SOMERSET – Carleton Marsden, 77, of Lafayette Street, Somerset, died on Saturday, 17 November, 2007, from complications related to diabetes. He was the husband of Elizabeth L. (Williams) Marsden, with whom he shared fifty-three years of married life. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Thomas Marsden and the late Florence (Buckley) Marsden, he lived in Somerset all of his life.
Mr. Marsden worked as a cabinet maker and owned the former Marsden Millwork of Fall River, where he specialized in interior and exterior custom architectural woodwork for schools, banks, churches, several of the Newport mansions and many residences. He also built sounding boards for harpsichords and other musical instruments which were shipped to Europe.
In 1967 he accepted the challenge of recreating the water wheel, shafts and gears as part of the historic reconstruction of the Jenny Grist Mill in Plymouth, MA, the first public utility in America. In the 1980s Mr. Marsden received two prestigious medals for “Living Successfully with Diabetes for 50 Years” by the Joselin Diabetes Center and the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Fall River and a Sunday School teacher there. In retirement he did volunteer work consisting of printing and duplication of flyers, bulletins, booklets for First Baptist Church, the Greater F.R. Council of Churches, the Somerset Public Library, the Greater F.R. Symphony Society, among many other non-profit organizations.
Mr. Marsden was also an Honorary Director of the Fall River Symphony and a former board member of the South Coast Opera Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother, Thomas Foster Marsden and his wife Phyllis of Somerset, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late James Marsden, Arthur Marsden and Florence Brayton.
Funeral Information
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 11:00AM in the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME FOR FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA, with burial to follow in Gibbs Cemetery, Somerset.
