Dorothy H. (Dixon) Baker, 84, of Fairhaven died Thursday, October 6, 2005 in New Bedford Rehabilitation Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of Harold C. “Red” Baker.

Born in Fairhaven September 10, 1921, the daughter of the late James G. and Matilda (Harrison) Dixon, she was a lifelong Fairhaven resident. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Fairhaven where she was a Deaconess, a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Women Fellowship.

Mrs. Baker was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and the Kinyon Campbell Business School. She was an operator for New England Telephone and later a secretary at Glen Coal and Oil Company and for Attorney Gerald Franklin. She retired from Dylchem Corporation.

She was the past president and lifetime member of the Colonial Club. She belonged to the Fairhaven Historical Commission. Mrs. Baker was the treasurer for the Rainbow Majority Club. She enjoyed baking bread and making her own preserves. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, gardening, and yard work.

She is survived by a son; Douglas Baker and his wife Lynn of Fairhaven; two daughters, Susan Dexheimer and her husband J. Patrick of Lakeville and Doreen Cleveland and her husband Gary of New Bedford; a brother, Walter Dixon of Dartmouth; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Information

Her funeral service will be Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at 10:00 AM in the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven. Interment will follow in River-Side Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven. Calling hours will be Monday from 2-5 PM in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
