Maria M. (Mendonca) Viveiros, 88, of New Bedford died in her home Saturday, June 25, 2005. She was the widow of Antone "Tony" Viveiros. Born June 5, 1917 in New Bedford the daughter of the late Angelo and Maria (Rosa) Mendonca, she left for Portugal with her parents, brother, and sister and returned to New Bedford at the age of 16.

Mrs. Viveiros was well known in the city for her hair cutting skills and loved doing her work until very late in her life. Earlier, she worked in a factory as a stitcher for a while, owned Maria’s Variety Store at the corner of Nash and Dimas for a few years. She left that business and entered the Wilford Academy for Hairstyling in Boston. Later, she went to New York and studied under Rober Fiance at the Institute of Leon Amendola, and attended many other hair fashion shows and conventions. Mrs. Viveiros took an added coarse on make up under Menzello a great make up artist. Although her love was hair styling, her second love was antiques. She started her own high class quality antique store at 1241 Church Street. Where she lived for many years; a then beautiful setting for her Victorian style with tuffed silk walls and marble statues. Mr. Liverace was one of her customers. Later in her life, she accomplished her long wished dream of on old home, the brown Queen Ann at 691 County Street, where she so proudly has shown to the public and friends, including the Preservation Society. She loved to entertain, including giving small parties to introduce neighbors to one another. Mrs. Viveiros loved meeting new people and making them feel at home at all times.

She is survived by a niece, Rosemary Rucker of Dartmouth and a great nephew, David Carl Rucker of New Bedford. She was the aunt of her beloved late nephew, David Mendonca.
