Elmer P. "Shorty" Beckman, 84, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 in St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Dorothy A. (Doberck) Beckman. It was their 62nd anniversary the day he passed away. Born January 3, 1921 in Philadelphia the son of the late Gustave A. and Beatrice (Askey) Beckman he lived in New Bedford for the last two years. He spent 50 years living in Fairhaven. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, Fairhaven. Mr. Beckman served in the United States Navy during WWII having served on the USS Ice Fish Submarine in the Pacific Theatre. He later worked as a commercial fisherman for many years on various vessels in New Bedford and Fairhaven. He enjoyed woodworking and playing the organ and guitar. Mr. Beckman loved spending time with his grandson. He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Joyce Perry and her husband Milton G. of Fairhaven and Karen Veary and her husband William of Fairhaven; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Carl Beckman; the brother of the late Henry Beckman; and grandfather of the late Carl Beckman, Jr. and Christopher Beckman.
