Atty. Fred M. Thomas, 87, of New Bedford died Sunday March 20, 2005 at St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford after a brief illness. He was the husband of Fernanda M. (Baptista) Thomas.

Born April 9, 1917 in New Bedford the son of the late Mitchell and the late Helen (Sader) Thomas, he was a life long New Bedford resident and a communicant of Our Lady of Purgatory Church.

Mr. Thomas graduated from Holy Family High School in New Bedford and attended Boston University and graduated from Boston University Law School in 1941. He was admitted into the practice of law in 1942 and was the first lawyer of Lebanese decent in the Greater New Bedford and Fall River area. He was an attorney for the law firm of Thomas and Thomas in New Bedford.

He was a sergeant in the senior division of the Reserve Officers Training Corps of Rhode Island and a colonel in the Rhode Island Bristol Train of Artillery of the Rhode Island Militia.

He was a member of the New Bedford Bar Association, Bristol County Bar Association, and Massachusetts Bar Association. He was also admitted to practice in the Federal Court, the Internal Revenue Service and the US Naturalization Service.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Sodality, the Knights of Columbus, Order of St. Sharbel, Nation Apostolate of Maronites, and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity.

Mr. Thomas was fluent in Portuguese, English, Arabic, and French.

He is survived by his wife; a brother, Atty. George M. Thomas and his wife Rejeanne of New Bedford; a sister, Janet E. Lalor and her husband Walter of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Arthur M. Thomas and Mary Joseph.

Funeral Information

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Wednesday, march 23, 2005 at 9:00 AM from the FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main St., FAIRHAVEN followed by a Divine Liturgy at 10:00AM in Our Lady of Purgatory Church in New Bedford. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, New Bedford. Calling hours will be Tuesday, march 22, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9.
