Karen A. (Tharl) Marchand., 54, of Sandy point Road in Somerset passed on Wednesday March 16, 2005 at Saint Anne’s hospital in Fall River after an eleven year battle with Leukemia. She was the wife of twenty seven years to Paul R. Marchand.

Mrs. Marchand was born in Attleboro, MA on Sept. 5, 1950, the daughter of the late Raymond J. and Helen (Cusson) Tharl. 

Mrs. Marchand was a graduate of North Attleboro High school class of 1968, and then graduated from UMASS Amherst in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.  She then went to work in the New Hampshire School System at Nashua High school for two years, and continued her education earning a masters degree in counseling in 1976.  Mrs. Marchand went to work for Northeastern University as the training director of career education until 1980, when she went to work at Case High School in Swansea as a special needs teacher. Mrs. Marchand left Case after a few years to spend time raising her family and working as Real Estate appraiser for the Kinnane Group. She also worked for Carol Brannaka Realtors.  For the last eleven years Mrs. Marchand has been a guidance counselor at Dartmouth Middle school. Mrs. Marchand was a CCD teacher at Saint Louis de France Church in Swansea, she was very active and held several offices with Citizens Scholarship Fund in Somerset, a member of the Somerset Garden Club, Somerset PTO, Somerset Sports Boosters, and was a scout leader for Brownie troop 1096 in Somerset. She was an avid Kayaker, enjoyed knitting, spending time with her family, the arts and painting.

Survivors beside her husband are three daughters Mary Kate Marchand of Gloucester, MA, Aimee Marchand of Somerset, MA, Kyla Marchand of San Diego, California, and a son, Jared Marchand of Somerset, MA. Mrs. Marchand was a special and long time care giver to Keith Fortier of Walpole, MA . She is also survived by a sister Sandra L. Bernier of Newport, MA, a brother Raymond E. Tharl of Casa Grande, Arizona a grandson Sam Fortier, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Charles Romikaitis.

Funeral Information

Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 9am from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10am in Saint Louis de France Church 56 Buffinton St., Swansea. Relatives and friends are invited to attend, burial to follow in Saint Patrick Cemetery Fall River. Calling Hours with a video photo album will be Friday from 4-7pm.

The family would also ask that you donate blood in Karen's memory to the American Red Cross.
