ALPHARETTA, GA – Alfred S. “Alfie” Texeira of Fairhaven died Monday, August 10, 2009, at the home of his granddaughter after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Rose (Lopes) Texeira. Born in Acushnet, the son of the late Dennis and the late Marianna (Santos) Texeira, he lived in Fairhaven since 1956 and was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in New Bedford. Mr. Texeira was a Tech Sergeant in the U. S. Army during WWII and later taught at New Bedford Vocational High School in New Bedford in the Auto Body Department. He retired in 1990, after which he drove for Tremblay's Bus Lines Co. Alphie was an Honorary Life Member of the American Legion Post 166 of Fairhaven, where he had served as Past Commander, Senior Vice Commander, Chaplain and Assistant Adjutant. He was also a current member of the Executive Board. Mr. Texeira was also a member of the VFW Fort Phoenix Post #2892 in Fairhaven. He is survived by a daughter, Lavernne Texeira of Johnston, RI; a son, Robert Texeira of Fairhaven; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, who affectionately remember him as "Gumpy"; a sister, Alice Morales of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Texeira was the brother of the late Anthony, Raymond and Bella Texeira. Funeral InformationHis funeral will be held Monday, August 17, 2009, at 10:00AM from THE FAIRHAVEN FUNERAL HOME, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in New Bedford. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, New Bedford. Calling hours are Sunday, August 16, from 2:00-5:00PM in the funeral home.
