NEW BEDOFRD – Mary (Melia) Ouimet, 96, of Plainville, MA, formerly of New Bedford, died Monday, December 7, 2009, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro after a brief illness. She was born and lived most of her life in New Bedford, moving to Plainville in 1995. Mary was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine Melia and the wife of the late Charles J. Ouimet.

Mrs. Ouimet attended Holy Family High School and was a long time communicant of St. James Church. She was an avid reader of newspapers and books until the end of her life. Mary was devoted to her family, her greatest joy being her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Deeply spiritual, she spent a part of each day praying for her family and her wide circle of friends.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Elaine Viera of New Bedford, and her husband Armand, and Professor Catherine McLaughlin of Plainville, MA; two sons, Dr. Charles Ouimet and his wife Janice of Crawfordville, FL, and Christopher Ouimet and his wife Dolores of Attleboro, MA. She was the mother of the late Kevin Ouimet and mother-in-law of the late Susan Ouimet of Westport, MA. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who loved her dearly, as well as by many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Winifred Amaral, and the late Catherine Melia.

Funeral Information

Her funeral will be held Friday, December 11, 2009, at 10:00AM from THE DONAGHY – HATHAWAY FUNERAL HOME, 465 County St., New Bedford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church, 233 County St., New Bedford, with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours will be held Thursday, December 10, from 4:00-7:00PM in the funeral home.
