View Tribute and Sign Guestbook SOMERSET – Elizabeth Jeannette (Dearden) Denning, left this vale of tears from Somerset, Massachusetts, on the morning of Sunday, October 21, 2007, in her eighty-ninth year. The daughter of the late James Densmore Dearden and the late Sarah Wells Dearden, she was the wife of the late Franklin Everett Denning, and the mother of Scot Denning of Fall River and Elizabeth Wells Denning of Somerset, and the mother-in-law of William H. Claus.
Educated at BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, she graduated from Smith College in 1939 with a BA and from Brown University several years later, earning a Ph.D. in linguistics, the study of languages. She put advanced graduate education to use by working for the War Department as a translator and phrase book creator for the troops in Europe, and later as a dictionary editor. She was a professor of English at Bristol Community College for fifteen years, where the Denning Prize is named for her. She was a volunteer at the Fall River Historical Society for many years, worked on The Knowlton Papers, and was most recently proof-reading the Fall River Historical Society’s newest book on Lizzie Borden to be published in 2008/2009.
