SOMERSET – Robert J. Marchand, 58, of Riverside Avenue, Somerset, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, in St. Leonard, Maryland. Born in Newport, RI, a son of Raymond Marchand of Swansea, and the late Dorothy (Pontes) Marchand, he was the former husband of Sharon Vital of Somerset, and Elizabeth “Luzzy” Kief of Louisiana.

He was employed as a construction project manager as well as a paint and wall paper hanger for many years. A Somerset resident for twenty-five years, after coming from Swansea, Mr. Marchard was a member of the Amicable Congregational Church.

Robert enjoyed fishing and sailing, once sailing in the Newport to Bermuda Race, as well as sailing the Schooner Ernestina from Florida to New Bedford. He was a softball coach, a Neil Young fan, played guitar and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He likewise enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Jesse.

Besides his father and his former wives, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Marchand of Somerset; two stepdaughters, Jessica Lagasse of Louisiana and Jillian Lagasse of London; four brothers, Kenneth Marchand, Keith Marchand, and Thomas Marchand, all of Swansea, and Steven Marchand of Westport; and a sister, Linda Berube of New Bedford. He is also survived by his beloved grandson, Jesse Marchand, as well as by several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Gathering will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010, from 10am to 12:30 pm in THE HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME FOR FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA. followed by a Funeral Home Service at 1 pm.
